Ration scam: Enforcement Directorate moves Calcutta High Court seeking transfer of probe to CBI

Justice Jay Sengupta on Monday ordered the State to file its response to the ED’s petition by March 5, while also noting that the matter would require a lengthy hearing.

The ED told the bench that it had registered a case (ECIR) based on six First Information Reports (FIRs) lodged by the State Police with regard to the said scam.

It pointed out that very influential persons from the ruling dispensation have been arrested in the case which led the ED to investigate the alleged siphoning of money.

The central agency also expressed its apprehension that the State may “damage” its own FIRs to make the ED’s ECIR “redundant.”

“The six FIRs have not been probed properly by the State. Though it has filed chargesheet in five cases and a final report in one matter. But given the fact that politically influential persons are involved in this scam, the probe be handed over to the CBI,” the ED submitted.
