SkillEnable, What’s Happening On Their Platform

Despite only a small proportion of our workforce being skilled, look at our country’s incredible growth story. A large part of our population could not access quality education as they did not have the financial resources to do so. If we can financially enable our workforce and help them gain valuable skill sets, the potential for India is unlimited.

Mission and Vision

SkillEnable’s main mission is to increase access to quality education in India. India is one of the youngest nations in the world (with more than 62% of the population in the working age). Living in a world where most of the advanced economies are burdened with aging populations we can see why people refer to India’s age distribution as a demographic dividend. Unfortunately today less than 4% of the Indian workforce is skilled, compared to 42% in the USA, 76% in Germany, 80% in Japan and 96% in South Korea (TOI, 27th Nov 2019).

Despite only a small proportion of our workforce being skilled, look at our country’s incredible growth story. A large part of our population could not access quality education as they did not have the financial resources to do so. If we can financially enable our workforce and help them gain valuable skill sets, the potential for India is unlimited.

SkillEnable mission statement of increasing access to quality education can be broken in 3 main aspects:

1) Designing and delivering high quality employability focused courses – We are continuously engaging with industry stakeholders (hiring partners, data science professionals, etc.) to update and improve our program based on live industry needs. Also unlike 99% of the Edtech Industry our classes are conducted LIVE ONLY by Industry experts and Elite Academia.

2) Financially enabling the education – Our unique learn now, pay when earn (more than minimum guaranteed CTC!) model enables candidates to join our program without paying any course fees! Our model is designed in a way to ensure that we only collect fees from them once they start earning a sustainable income (minimum guaranteed CTC) so as to ensure zero stress on our students.

3) Increasing Awareness in youth about new and upcoming fields like Data Science – with India growing rapidly the job market has been evolving rapidly. Most students are simply unaware of the new industries, jobs and opportunities. Even if some are broadly aware of the subject, they lack clarity on the path to be taken to get where they want. This is where SkillEnable comes in and counsels the students based on an estimation of their aptitude. This simple yet important aspect goes a long way in ensuring the student has a successful beginning in the career of their choice.

How did the journey begin? (Founder’s perspective)

After completing my masters and coming back to India I had the opportunity to work with many education companies across the spectrum in India. Unfortunately what I saw was that most education institutions did not place any importance on the outcome for the student while still charging them exorbitant fees. A lot of students and their parents take loans to pay for these

high fees and as a result fall into a debt trap when the student cannot land a job/job with decent pay.

Here is how I think about the problem

1) Very little information available – Most students/parents don’t have an idea about which course to pursue in order to make a career in their preferred domain. They are often misled by brokers/counsellors.

2) Low Quality Education – Sadly many institutions in India do not focus on the quality of their teaching and have very low standards. In today’s fast paced and dynamic world syllabus and teaching methods have to be constantly updated to meet industry needs. This is where they really lack.

3) Lack of access to finance – as India still has a very low banking penetration most candidates find it very difficult to arrange for formal financing. They have to arrange for it informally which is usually very expensive.

4) No focus on placement – This for me is the single biggest problem. 99% of institutes in India feel their only job is to award the student a degree. I disagree, I think it is an institute’s responsibility to ensure the student gets a well paying job, especially after paying high fees. This is the main difference between education in India and education abroad.

This is what inspired SkillEnable. I wanted to create an institution that brings to Indians world class employability focused courses with a “Learn now, Pay after you start earning” model. Furthermore our students only start paying us when they start earning more than the ‘Minimum Guaranteed CTC’ which is pre decided before they enroll for the programme. This is to ensure that the student can comfortably pay back his/her fees without it becoming a burden for them.

What makes it unique?

Following are the features that make SkillEnable a one-of-its-kind edtech company:

– Tailor-made courses structured to meet specific industry needs.

– Prime focus to enhance the employability of the candidate.

– Focus on job-relevant skill set training, networking skills, interview practice, and other employability enhancing tools.

– SkillEnable provides 100% live online courses, which facilitate instant doubt resolution, which is not possible in pre-recorded classes.

– Intensive assessment oriented selection process of candidates. 2% of total applications received are selected. Candidates go through a series of assessments designed to find the best fit for the Data Science Industry. This model enables us to pick candidates based on merit, resulting in a high quality, diverse pool of applicants. The robust screening process saves time and effort when it comes to hiring candidates.

– SkillEnable provides 100% live online courses, which facilitate instant doubt resolution, which is not possible in pre-recorded classes.

● SkillEnable adopts a student-centric approach where learning is personalized, engaging, skill-based, and not restricted to the classroom. Learning is made more dynamic by incorporating students’ skills and capabilities into the process.

● The batch size is deliberately kept small to give enough attention to every student. Trainers and industry experts are always available to help the students.

● The course fee is charged via ISA (Income Sharing Agreement), which provides a solution to the huge upfront fee risk/stress that the students usually face. SkillEnable believes in investing in its candidates and charges them only if they get placed after completing the course. The fee is charged as a certain percentage of the salary only after the candidates get placed and start earning a minimum guaranteed ctc.

What’s in the pipeline?

SkillEnable plans on expanding from Data Science to domains such as Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Corporate Finance, Asset Pricing and DevOps Engineering. We are constantly analysing the placements opportunities and working with our various placement partners to update our courses and to bring new and relevant courses for our students in a “Learn now, pay after you earn model”. Beyond SkillEnable we hope our approach can bring a change to the education industry in India and spur institutions to offer courses that “Link the payment for education to the outcome of the education” or “Outcome linked Education”.

Expansion Plans

SkillEnable seeks to widen its target audience to assist a greater demographic get access to quality education and job opportunities. It also plans to include more courses in its portfolio, expanding to different domains which have asymmetric demand and supply.
