Sony To Set-up $200 Mn Fund To Invest in Indian Start-ups

The VC fund will look to invest in startups that are not just in their early stage but also hold long-term strategic value. As per reports, Vijay Singh, former CEO of Fox Star Studios will lead the fund.

At a time when Bollywood and sports celebrities are looking to invest in startups, Sonyā€™s VC fund plans to hop on the bandwagon and co-invest with them. Notable names like Virat Kohli, Amitabh Bacchan, Deepika Padukone, among others are not just endorsing products but are also co-owning a stake in the brand. While the governmentā€™s Startup India Seed Fund is of I$127.3 Mn, supporting 300 incubators and 3,600 seed-stage startups,  the Sony VC corpus surpasses it with an amount of $200 Mn

The VC fund will look to invest in startups that are not just in their early stage but also hold long-term strategic value. As per reports, Vijay Singh, former CEO of Fox Star Studios will lead the fund. He has been working with Bollywood for the major chunk of his career. He was the brain behind Fox Star Studiosā€™ 2010 venture into Bollywood with Dharma Productions. He has also backed several domestic production houses like those owned by Sajid Nadiadwala, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Ajay Devgn, among others.
