Films on Mahatma Gandhi’s Assassination
Hey Ram (2000)
Hey Ram is a 2000 Indian period crime drama film co-written, directed, and produced by Kamal Haasan. The film stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role, with Rani Mukerji, Atul Kulkarni, and Naseeruddin Shah in supporting roles.
The film’s plot centers around the partition of India in 1947 and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. It shows a semi-fictional story of a character who also wants to kill Mahatma Gandhi and he has reasons for that too, It was India’s official entry to the 73rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
Gandhi is a 1982 British-Indian epic historical drama film based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who led the nonviolent resistance movement against British colonial rule in India during the first half of the 20th century.
The film was directed by Richard Attenborough and written by John Briley. It stars Ben Kingsley in the title role. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Kingsley. It is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made.
Nine Hours to Rama (1963)
“Nine Hours to Rama” is a 1963 British-American historical drama film directed by Mark Robson and starring Horst Buchholz, José Ferrer, and Wendy Hiller. The film is based on the true story of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. The film explores the events leading up to the assassination, including the background and motivations of the assassin, Nathuram Godse. The film was not well received critically and was a box office failure.
The Gandhi Murder (2019)
The Gandhi Murder is a 2019 Indian-British historical drama film directed by Rakesh Sharma and written by Rakesh Sharma and Sanjay Upadhyay. The film is based on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, and the events leading up to it.
The film stars Ian Charleson as Mahatma Gandhi and Darshan Jariwala as Nathuram Godse. The film was released on 15th February 2019. It was criticized for its depiction of Godse as a patriot and Gandhi as a divisive figure, and for its alleged distortion of historical facts.
Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh (2023)
Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh is still running in cinema halls, the film shares the stories of two different ideologies and how they end up in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, it shares the story of Nathuram Godse, who killed Gandhi in 1948. The film is directed by the legendary director Rajkumar Santoshi.
The film is loved by critics but due to the huge demand for Pathaan, it got fewer screens in the multiplex and going to become a box office failure.
