Tater Tots Chaat

Sweet, Spicy & Tangy this Tater Tots Chaat is loaded with an incredible combination of flavors and textures. A simpler version of the traditional North-Indian Aloo chaat, this recipe uses crispy air-fried tater tots that are layered with chickpeas, creamy yogurt, spicy green chutney, sweet-tangy tamarind chutney, crunchy onions, and sev.

Easy Spin on the Classic Aloo Chaat

This recipe is an easier version of the traditional Aloo Chaat (Potato Chaat), a popular street food dish from India! In the traditional Aloo Chaat recipe, cubes of boiled potatoes are fried to golden-crispy textures and then layered over with yogurt, chutneys, spices, and crunchy sev. My version uses store-bought frozen Tater Tots (love Trader Joe’s) that are air-fried to a golden crispy perfection making it a perfect base for the Aloo Chaat. A must-try gluten-free and vegetarian dish to enjoy as a snack or a meal.

What is Chaat

Chaat or Chat is essentially a sweet-spicy-savory dish that can be served as a snack, appetizer, or light meal. In India, Chaat is often sold in small street-side stalls and people often enjoy them after work or on weekends. Some of the classic dishes include lip-smacking pain puri, papdi chaat, pain puri, bhel, dahi puri, samosa chaat, potato chaat, etc.

Ingredients

  • Tater Tots – sold in the freezer section of most US grocery stores. I love Trader Joe’s that are perfect bite-sized potatoes that can be air-fried or baked
  • Canned Chickpeas – canned chickpeas come in handy and although they are not added to traditional aloo chaat I love them for added protein
  • Yogurt – plain yogurt with a hint of sugar and salt adds creamy textures to the chaat
  • Green Chutney – cilantro mint chutney adds just the right amount of spice
  • Tamarind Chutney – sweet and tangy tamarind chutney is available in Indian stores, but I would recommend this make ahead Homemade Tamarind Chutney
  • Onions – finely diced red onions add a beautiful color and crunch
  • Sev – thin fried gram flour noodles sold in Indian grocery stores add a perfect crunch to this chaat
  • Spices – red chili powder, ground cumin, and chaat masala

How to make Tater Tots Chaat

  • Air Fry Tater tots at 400 F for 12 minutes
  • On a serving platter add the chickpeas. Season them lightly with salt and red chili powder
  • Layer the air-fried tater tots on top of the chickpeas

Serving

Chaat is best served immediately at room temperature. More chutneys, yogurt, sev, and ground spices can be added to individual bowls as per your taste preference. I love to serve chaat with mango lassi, cardamom lassi, aam panna, lemonade, or chai. It is also my go-to appetizer when hosting a birthday party, Diwali, or Holi get-togethers.

Storing

Aloo Chaat is best served immediately. If you are making this for a party, simply keep all the ingredients ready to go in individual bowls and assemble just before you are ready to serve. Any leftover chaat can be refrigerated for a day. The Tater Tots will absorb the liquids so when serving simply add yogurt mixed with sugar + salt and top off with a few tablespoons of crunchy sev.

Variations

  • Traditional Aloo chaat does not have chickpeas. So feel free to skip them if you like
  • Dairy-free yogurt can be used for a vegan chaat
  • If you do not have an air fryer, use the oven to cook the tater tots by following the instructions on the package
  • Most ingredients in this recipe can be added to your taste – add more or less chutneys, yogurt, and spices
