CJI Chandrachud was delivering a public lecture at the University of Edinburgh’s Law School on the topic Global Change and the Legal Profession, Past and Future: Perspectives from India on June 1.
During the interaction with the audience after his speech, a question was posed to him on whether he thinks Supreme Court is the only pillar to uphold the ideals of Constitution.
“What is your idea of the role played by the legal sphere and participative democracy in post colonial India, in terms of human rights as well?”
“Courts are very important, but to have a truly rights-alert or a right-vibrant society, there has to be continuous engagement between the courts, citizens and civil society organisations,” he explained.
