Criminal Justice Student Fellowship 2022-23 by NLUD’s Project 39A [12 Months; Stipend Rs 35K]: Apply by April 30

Project 39A is now offering a 12-month Criminal Justice Student Fellowship 2022-23 to law students to work and contribute to Project 39A’s research and pro bono legal representation endeavours.

About Project 39A

Project 39A (P39A) draws inspiration from Article 39-A in the Indian Constitution on equal justice and signals broadening their work on India’s criminal justice system.

P39A undertakes litigations, research, and outreach relating to forensics, torture, legal aid, mental health, criminal justice, and the death penalty.

About the Criminal Justice Student Fellowship

Fellows will assist with archival, doctrinal, comparative, and field research across Project 39A’s work, i.e., accountability for torture, death penalty, forensics, mental health and criminal justice, sentencing and the Fair Trial Program.

Fellows will assist in writing research reports and journal articles dealing with contemporary issues in the field of constitutional and criminal law in India. Fellows will also have the opportunity to develop innovative strategies with the communications team to disseminate and outreach our work.

Number of Fellowships and Duration

3 Fellowships for 12 months each.

Eligibility

III/IV students of an integrated 5-year LL.B. program or II/III-year students of a 3 year LL.B. program during the academic year 2022-2023.

Stipend

Rs. 35,000 for the duration of the Fellowship (12 months) to be offered on the successful completion of the Fellowship.

How to Apply for P39A’s Criminal Justice Fellowship?

Applicants must fill out the online form available through the link given at the end of this post and upload three documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae,
  2. Statement of Purpose of not more than 500 words explaining their interest in this Fellowship, and
  3. Writing Sample of not more than 1500 words (exclusive of footnotes) critically commenting on ONE of the following issues:
    1. The implications of reverse burden of proof clauses on the presumption of innocence in criminal trials.
    2. Section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 and its links with custodial violence.
    3. Competence to stand trial outlined in Chapter 25 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
  4. Please note that submissions that exceed the word limit will not be considered.

Formatting guidelines:

  • The submission must be word-processed and in Times New Roman.
  • The main text should be in font size 12 and footnotes in font size 10, with 1.5 line spacing.
  • References should be in the OSCOLA style.
  • Note: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a virtual interview and Project 39A reserves the right to conduct further rounds of assessment.

Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted by 11.59 pm, April 30, 2022. Applicants shortlisted for interviews will be informed within 14 days of the deadline.

If you do not hear from the selection committee within 10 days, please assume that your application has not been successful.
