Delhi High Court tells authorities why dairies can’t be near landfill sites

A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said that dairy colonies must be relocated to areas with proper sewage, drainage and biogas facilities and ample open spaces.

“Next to the landfill sites, the cows shall without doubt feed on waste and if their milk is consumed by humans, in particular children, it is bound to cause illness. Keeping in view the grave threat that dairies next to the landfills can cause to humans, this court is prima facie of the view that these dairies need to be relocated forthwith,” the Court said in its order.

The Court was dealing with a plea filed by advocate Sunayana Sibal and others seeking directions to shift nine dairy colonies in the national capital to other appropriate locations.

However, the Court said that before issuing any binding directions, it would like to hear from the concerned officials as to how these directions should be framed.

It directed the Delhi Chief Secretary, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Directorate Veterinary, MCD and the CEO of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to join the proceedings on the next date of hearing.

The Bench ordered that the officials shall also explore the possibility of availability of land where the dairies can be relocated.
