Chitale was arrested on May 14 on the ground that she made disparaging remarks about Pawar’s illness, appearance and voice and also called him corrupt in a post that she shared on her Facebook profile, which was a Marathi poem attributed to another person.
The poem mentioned the surname (Pawar), age (80) and physical ailments which the NCP leader is also suffering from.
Soon after the post, an FIR was lodged at Kalwa police station in Thane district under Sections 500 (defamation), 501 (printing or engraving defamatory matter) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Subsequently, 21 more FIRs were registered against the actress. She is, however, out on bail after a Thane court ordered her release in the very first FIR lodged in Kalwa.
