The case was initiated through a private complaint by the Superintendent of Police of the Lokayukta Special Investigation Force (SIT). The complaint alleged that from 2006 to 2010, the eight accused sold iron ore powder amounting to 30.32 metric tonnes for a sum of about ₹8.92 crores.
The ore was transported to the Karwar Port without obtaining necessary permissions from the Department of Mines and Geology and permits from the concerned authorities.
