India is secular; why is PIL on RTE Act only for cause of minority and not majority: Supreme Court

The Court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition that sought enforcement of the Right to Education Act (RTE Act) for notified minorities.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna said that emphasis cannot be given to minority alone when it comes to issues like right to education.

Why have you taken up the cudgels only for the minority, and excluded the majority? Why is it that you have given special emphasis to minority alone? Religion is important when it is. Otherwise, we are a secular nation,” Justice Joseph remarked.

The Court, therefore, gave the petitioner the liberty to file a fresh petition, after withdrawing the present one.
