How did you apply for the internship?

I applied for the internship through my college’s Training & Placement Cell.

First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression

I was so excited that I left my house too early and arrived at the chambers at precisely 09:15 am, 15 minutes prior to the reporting time. Since I reached there quite early, I was asked by the receptionist to sit and wait in the waiting room.

Around 10 am, the senior associate, along with the partner, arrived in the office, and I stood up to greet them. The partner, as well as the associate, were very humble.

The senior associate explained to me the work they were doing and what kind of matters they had been working on in detail.

Main tasks

As a legal intern, I was required to go through cases and jot down the important points. Furthermore, there was a lot of work-related to drafting.

For instance, I was drafting complaints, affidavits, legal notices, and agreements. I was given a sample of the draft and then expected to draft the assigned complaint or legal notice with the help of the given sample.

Apart from this, the other tasks included researching and finding out cases that were relevant to specific provisions of arbitration matters. In addition, the intern had to assist the associates in the court matters and observe and note down the dates given for hearing every time.

Work environment

Honestly speaking, the work environment, if you are willing to get and learn more, was perfect. However, in terms of ambiance and space, the office was not really big, and one had to adjust in the same room with the associates and the clerks.

Good things

There is only space for two interns to work. However, during that period, I was the only intern, so I was expected to carry out the maximum no. of tasks, whether it was drafting or attending matters in the court. It was great learning since many interns when working in a law firm, are distributed the work, but here one can take all the tasks and make mistakes and learn from them.

Bad things

The ambiance was not great. The office had limited space, and there wasn’t much outside the office where one could go and have lunch or snack on something. The interns/associates/ clerks everyone used to get their own tiffins or order from Zomato.

Stipend

No stipend was being provided during the course of the internship.

Details about accommodation and commute

One had to arrange their mode of commuting because it used to get very difficult at times to get an auto or a cab, and the metro station was not so close to the office. In terms of commute, one had to tie up in advance.

Anything else?

I am glad that I was able to learn the basic skills of drafting from this internship and enhanced my research skills as well.
