How did you apply for the internship?

I applied directly by going to the office of the District and Session Judge, Jind, and then was
required to submit some documents.

It included, an application for interning, my CV and an ID proof of my college.

First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression

There were no first-day formalities apart from introducing myself and greeting the court staff. The infrastructure there is very well maintained.

This was my very first experience of being in a Court and therefore its infrastructure did
mesmerize me, as being very different from what is shown in the movies.

Main Tasks

I was tasked with making case briefs and summarizing the main facts of the cases being listed.

I was allowed to witness the proceedings of five different courtrooms in this one-month period experiencing the changes in the way.

Proceedings are conducted in a particular courtroom.

Also, this was a solitary way to see the “behind the scenes” of the judicial decision-making process and learn what effective advocacy looks like in practice.

Work Environment

There is a great learning environment in the District Court of Jind.

Not only the judicial officers but every court member is patiently ready to answer all the questions that
I had as an intern.

Good Things

The Good thing in this respect was, I had the facts to experience the cases regarding some particular sections (like S 379, 380, 174(A), 302, etc. of IPC).

Then after reading them from the bare acts, it all gave me a better understanding of these laws, which I’m probably not going to forget in the near future.

Bad Things

I can think of only one thing that could be termed as bad while interning at this place.

Since I was a first-year student, I wasn’t well acquainted with the sections of the penal and procedure codes.

Stipend

The internship was not paid, but the perks involved a certificate of completion of internship.

Details about accommodation and commute

Regarding the accommodation and commuting, I did not face any difficulty in it, since the
place of office was very near to my house.

Anything else?

There was a lot to learn from this internship. The judges’ humbleness and knowledge unquestionably inspired me to pursue my dream of joining the judicial services of India.

My internship started under the able guidance of the honorable Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sh. Arvind Kumar Bansal sir, and his energetic approach in the cases and his idea of never being rigid in your opinions did enthral me.

Further, the calm and composed nature of the honorable Judicial Magistrate, Sh. Sachin Kumar sir did implant in me the confidence to keep having faith in the judicial system and the laws of the country.

Then, the actual difference between the workings of a single Judge bench and a Board was clear to me by being under the learned Principal Magistrate (Juvenile Justice Board), Nisha ma’am.

She shared with me the intricacies of dealing with child offenders and also narrated to me a few cases that she had dealt with, in her remarkable work journey till now.
