An official message was sent to all the interns to grasp an amazing opportunity to intern at the parent institution of the NGO, for which, I got excited and emailed my curriculum vitae to Monisha Mahajan Madam, Principal Attorney of Simone and Josephine.

When my profile got shortlisted, I was interviewed by her, where she asked questions regarding my strengths and weaknesses, why should I get selected, etc., and by God’s grace, I was able to make it.

First Day Formalities, Infrastructure, First Impression

When one enters the firm, he would see tons of bookshelves with hundreds of heavy law books about legal topics, the evidence act, CrPc, etc. in the hall and as he proceeds, there are some desks for interns and employees, all of which are connected via Skype.

There is a big conference room just by the side which has closets for storing clients’ files. On the first day, I was warmly received by everyone, and my daily tasks were reiterated to me.

In between, I had casual conversations with my fellow mates about their career plans, their institute, etc., which made it a fun learning experience

Main Tasks

Being a freshman, I couldn’t take up the skilled task of drafting or preparing summaries of their client’s case, but I worked on the social media and online engagement of the law firm.

I wrote several articles on sundry legal issues, penned a few daily legal updates, and produced Youtube videos and Instagram reels regarding important contemporary issues, important judgments, etc.

Work Environment

The overall decorum was very organized, the colleagues were friendly with each other during the overall conduct, and the best thing was that we all used to have our lunch together with Monisha Ma’am, just like a family.

Once, I went to the firm on a holiday to discuss some concerns with ma’am, and she was so nice to make tea for her, the gardener, and me! One can’t expect such a benevolent gesture from his boss, which reflects how gem of a person she is.

Good things

Monisha Madam is a very empathetic person who looks at the concerns of the interns as if they were her own, and the way she guided me, not only about the legal fraternity but about life, is priceless.

Bad things

There was no downside to the internship as such, but the location was at a pretty great distance from my residence, and travelling there daily, to and fro, was strenuous. The timings of the internship were from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which is quite long, but worth it.

Stipend

I didn’t receive any stipend, which makes sense as I was in my 1st year and securing an internship at a law firm as amazing as Simon and Josephine were due to the considerate nature of the founder, but I did receive priceless orientation, keen observation of the whole working environment in a legal firm, got to know about sundry pivotal legal concepts, honed my writing skills, and last but not the least, developed soft skills and a bit of corporate ethics.

Lessons Learned

This was one of my first steps into the professional arena, the life I would opt for after I complete my degree, getting a hands-on approach to how things are done, and developing professional etiquette, etc., which can be catered by internships akin to these, and their tastes can be savoured only if an intern gives his cent per cent efforts for the same.
