Madras High Court seeks Centre’s response on PIL for climate change assessment before EIA reports

The PIL filed by one G Sundarrajan said that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had issued an EIA notification in 2006 in exercise of the powers conferred upon it under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The notification mandates that large-scale construction projects must be undertaken only after obtaining prior environment clearances either from the Centre or the State-level EIA Authority, depending upon the category under which those projects fall.

The petitioner said that the authorities before granting environment clearance for such large-scale projects, must also factor in climate change which is a growing concern at present.

The PIL was filed through advocate M Radhakrishnan.
