Madras High Court seeks response from Central government, TN on digitising post-mortem reports, medico legal documents

The software was built to enable health organisations to issue medico-legal reports and certificates such as postmortem reports, medical examination reports in cases of sexual assault, etc., digitally and to store such data in cloud storage in encrypted form, the PIL said.

The petitioner said that states such as Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have already adopted the MedLeaPR software framework for all government-run hospitals.

However, several representations made on the issue by the petitioner to the Tamil Nadu government had gone answered, the petitioner contended.

“Medico-legal records are sent to investigating police officers for further investigation. These records are important for individuals, institutions, family of the deceased, physicians, undertaker and those authorizing burial, legal certification, police, judiciary, insurance company etc. So, it is important to issue those reports in a legible, readable format to render justice and issue/store in an encrypted manner to prevent unauthorized manipulations,” the plea said.

The Court then issued notice to the respondent parties.

Advocate Mohamed Ansar appeared for the petitioner.
