PIL filed before Bombay High Court challenging notice to cut 177 trees in Aarey for Mumbai Metro depot

The petitioner, Zoru Bathena, claimed that the notice was issued by the tree authority on an application was filed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL).

MMRCL’s application before the tree authority came to be filed after a Supreme Court order of November 2022, allowing the corporation to pursue its request for felling of 84 trees for the project.

Based on the MMRCL application, the tree authority then issued a public notice for objections and suggestions.

“The notice dated January 12, 2023, issued by the tree authority is for removal of 177 trees, having a different set of tree ID numbers in comparison to MMRCL’s application which was for only 84 trees,” the petition stated.

Bathena submitted that she was compelled to file a PIL after the authority refused to withdraw its notice.
