Plea in Jammu and Kashmir High Court seeks release of Senior Advocate NA Ronga from preventive detention

The habeas corpus petition has been filed through Ronga’s wife Bilquees Ronga. It states that the allegations levelled against the senior lawyer to justify his preventive detention are baseless, concocted and malicious.

The plea contends that the detention order, which is argued to have been passed out of vengeance, deserves to be quashed on this ground alone.

The plea filed through advocate BA Khan further alleges that the authorities have not followed the mandate of law enshrined by the Supreme Court’s ruling in the DK Basu case when they arrested Ronga.

The plea has also sought compensation of ₹60 lakhs from the government on allegations that NA Ronga was illegally detained and tortured and for the ensuing violation of his fundamental right to life and liberty.

The detention has tarnished the senior lawyer’s hard-earned, sound status and reputation, and ruined his professional prospects, for which he deserves to be compensated, the petition added.

The matter is likely to be heard by the High Court on September 18, 2024.
