[Pongal 2022] Postpone Jallikattu in light of increasing COVID-19 cases: Plea in Madras High Court

The petitioner’s submission was that the permitted contestants were 300 in number and would not be able to maintain social distancing norms. Further, it was pointed out that the COVID-19 infection was escaping vaccine-provided immunity and that even after two doses, people were getting infected. It was also stated that RT-PCR tests were not fool-proof as one may develop an infection after the test was administered.

It was pointed out that no guidelines had been announced for selection of the visitors and contestants among those who were registered, since every year, several thousands of people spectators attend Jallikattu.

Moreover, no details were provided as to the number of government officials, organisers and reporters who would participate in the programme, nor was the venue, date or time laid down.
