This came after Sharma pointed out that there was no city civil court in a UP district.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana then said there are many such districts and he had written to the Central government highlighting the same.
“There are many districts. What to do? We have asked the Centre. I wrote a letter and expressed my anguish. Even submitted a report. You can file a plea,” the CJI said.
Sharma then said that he is often criticised for filing PILs.
“Once I file a plea everyone jumps on me,” he said.
“Now we are asking you (to file a plea),” the CJI replied with a smile.
“I will file today itself my lord,” Sharma said.
Sharma, who is the lead petitioner in cases like Coalgate and Pegasus, has often invited the wrath of the top court for filing PILs deemed frivolous.
In 2014, the Supreme Court had imposed costs of ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 on Sharma – the first one in a PIL for quashing the sale of Air India hotels and the second in a Habeas Corpus petition on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
In 2015, the Court had issued show cause notice to him for filing frivolous public interest litigation petitions (PIL) and for making scandalous and irresponsible allegations against Members of Parliament (MPs).
In 2018, the Court once again came down upon him filing a PIL with unfounded claims against Union Ministers including the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister.
