Punjab Judicial Services Examination Preliminary Stage

Bare Acts are the backbone of any judicial examination. However, aspirants often find themselves underlining and marking everything and getting confused.

For getting the best information possible from the Acts, read each line of the sections at least once and mark what seems necessary. When reading the second time, skip the unnecessary information and read only that material which is marked important. 

With the third and fourth readings, focus and revise only the necessary examination-based material and start making notes.

Aspirants can also use the index method strategy. For this method, take a print copy of the index of the Act. In front of each section, write the relevant keywords. This method is helpful for recalling important information without having to open a book before exams.

Nowadays, the pattern of the Punjab Judicial Services Examination is shifting from theoretical-based questions to situation-based.

For answering such questions, it is important to give extra attention to learning and understanding the law and not only mugging up the sections. The knowledge of the application of law in situation-based questions is very important from the Punjab Judicial Services Exam point of view.

Lastly, focus on the current case laws and current developments nationally and internationally. In Prelims, many times questions come from current developments as well. 

Track your mistakes

If aspirants don’t want to make silly mistakes in the exam, they need to learn from them during their preparation. That is why tests series and question banks are important. It trains the aspirants to know how to attempt the maximum number of questions in minimum time.

We suggest during your preparation, write down where you are making mistakes and which subject is giving you the most difficulty. 

Once you have identified the mistakes, correct them and learn from them so that you do not commit them during your examination.

Law papers

Bare Acts and standard student-friendly books are a great way to cover law subjects. Make flow charts to remember differences and comparisons in a particular topic. 

In the Mains examination, presentation is really important. For theoretical questions, write the introduction, mention the relevant legal provisions and leading case laws. For non-theoretical questions, before proceeding to write, read the question twice to see what exactly is asked.

Tip: Learn to sit for 3-6 hours and practice answer writing at home before the exams.

English and Punjabi Language Essay

Language paper in any judicial exam is important and scoring. That is why aspirants must prepare it wisely. Langauge paper includes Essay writing, Translation, Punjabi, and English grammar. 

Essay Writing

For English and Punjabi essays, aspirants cannot predict the topic. However, what they can do is learn to assemble thoughts and information. The essay should have a natural flow of thoughts and must be well drafted.

Topics for essays can be looked up online or in various essay books available in the market. Practice writing essays on current news, social issues beforehand so that on the day of the examination, you have an idea of what to write.

For aspirants from a non-Punjabi background, Punjabi language paper must be attempted carefully as aspirants who are fluent in Punjabi speaking and writing will have an edge. To shorten the gap, put extra effort into the English language section and prepare everything well in advance. Don’t leave anything for the end. 

Books and Materials

B.A Punjab English book will cover the grammar portion. 

You can refer to the Punjab board 8th-10th class books to cover Punjabi grammar. It would be more than enough. For Punjabi essays, develop neat handwriting otherwise, scoring good marks will be difficult. 

Mandeep Kaur, Rank 7, in Punjab Judicial Services Exam 2019 mentioned in an interview that start Punjabi essays with a poem or quotation. It helps in scoring extra marks.” 

BA Elective books help prepare English grammar. Some quotations are general that can be used in any essay. Make a list of such quotations which will help in the exam.

Interview

In this round, aspirants are quizzed on current burning issues in the country and law provisions. Aspirants must educate themselves on the matter of current affairs and have an opinion of their own to show original thinking.

Develop personality by incorporating characteristics that are seen in a Judge. It is a time taking process, so put time and effort into it.
