UP court issues arrest warrant against Swami Prasad Maurya in seven-year-old case of hurting religious sentiment

Maurya, who was the Cabinet Minister for Labour, Employment and Co-ordination in the Yogi Adityanath government, had resigned from the post yesterday.

The court ordered Maurya to be produced before it by January 24.

In 2014, Maurya who was then the General Secretary of Bahujan Samaj Party, had allegedly given a controversial statement in which he had said that Goddess Gauri and Lord Ganesh should not be worshipped during marriages, terming it a trick by Brahminical society to mislead Dalits.

In 2016, the Allahabad High Court had stayed the order of a local court in Sultanpur, which had found Maurya prima facie responsible for hurting religious sentiments through his statements.
