‘Sharp increase in hate crimes, remain vigilant,’ India warns students travelling to Canada

New Delhi: India has warned its citizens and students travelling to Canada that there has been a sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in that country.

The Ministry of External Affairs and diplomats in Canada have taken up these incidents with Canadian authorities, a ministry advisory said Thursday, adding the country has been requested to investigate these crimes and take appropriate action.

The ministry also said Canadian authorities have not brought to book the perpetrators of these hate crimes.

The ministry exhorted Indians travelling to Canada to “exercise due caution and remain vigilant”.

Indian nationals and students have also been asked to register with the high commission in Ottawa or consulates general in Toronto and Vancouver through their websites, or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in.

The government said this would enable Indian authorities in Canada “to better connect with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any requirement or emergency”.
