Soccer-Leipzig title hopes hit in surprise 1-0 loss to Bochum

BERLIN (Reuters) – RB Leipzig suffered a shock 1-0 loss to strugglers VfL Bochum on Saturday to leave them seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga only four days after their Champions League exit.

Bochum grabbed the winner three minutes after the restart when Leipzig keeper Janis Blaswich parried a Takuma Asano header into the path of Erhan Masovic, who was left with a simple header into the net.

Leipzig, who crashed out of the Champions League following a 7-0 demolition by Manchester City in their last-16 second leg on Tuesday, should have levelled just before the hour.

Striker Andre Silva, however, squandered two gilt-edged chances, including a simple tap-in at the far post.

Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann then tipped an Emil Forsberg header over the bar before denying Dani Olmo from close range in stoppage time but Leipzig’s best chance fell to Silva who hit the post after a solo effort.

Leipzig are on 45 points in third place, with Bayern Munich, who travel to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, in top spot on 52. Bochum moved up to 25 points in 14th.

Borussia Dortmund, second on 50, host Cologne later on Saturday while Union Berlin and Freiburg, also on 45, are in action on Sunday.
