‘What’s there in UP?’: Bhojpuri singer Neha Rathore gets into song war with BJP MP Ravi Kishan

New Delhi: Bhojpuri singer and social media sensation Neha Singh Rathore, who is known for her witty takes on current socio-political issues, has a new viral hit out — and this time she has taken on the Yogi Adityanath government, in a song war with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Kishan.

On Sunday, Rathore uploaded a song titled ‘UP Mein Ka Ba’ (what’s there in UP?), on her popular YouTube channel.

In the song, she criticised the UP government over several issues: Covid deaths during second wave of the pandemic, Hathras ‘rape and murder case’, the alleged murder of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri by the son of Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra, among others.

Several Opposition leaders and social media influencers shared Rathore’s 1-minute track that was released hours after Ravi Kishan released a 5-minute Bhojpuri election song.

In his song titled ‘UP Mein Sab Ba’ (UP has everything), the saffron-clad BJP leader introduced himself as ‘Ravi Kishan Shukla’ and praised the achievements of the Adityanath government to woo the Bhojpuri voters.

Yogi ke sarkar ba, vikas ke bahaar ba, sadakan ke jaal ba, kaam bemisal ba, apradhi ke jel ba, bijli relam rel ba, Corona gayil har ba, UP mein sab ba (It’s Yogi’s government, there is a development wave, a web of roads, fantastic work, criminals behind bars, electricity everywhere, Covid has lost… UP has everything),” Kishan sang.

Taking a dig at these claims, Rathore sang: “Corona se lakhan mar gayil le, laashan se Ganga bhar gayil be, kaafan nochat kukur bilar ba, ae baba, UP mein ka ba? (Covid killed lakhs, filled up the Ganga, shrouds were all over… what’s there in UP?)”

She also cited the October 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri incident, in which Union Minister of Home Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra, allegedly ran over four farmers, among others, at a protest site. The singer referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘chaukidar’ image to question who is responsible for the incident.

Mantri ke betuva badi rangdar ba, kisanan ke chhati pe rondat motar car ba, ae chaukidar, bolo ke zimmedar ba? (Minister’s son has an attitude, runs over the farmers in his car, eh ‘chaukidar’, who’s responsible?).”

Who is Neha Singh Rathore?

Rathore rose to fame in 2020, after the Modi government announced a complete lockdown, with her rap song ‘Bihar Mein Ka Ba’. It was inspired by a viral hit ‘Bambai Mein Ka Ba’, which featured Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee and highlighted the plight of migrant workers.

Rathore’s song struck a chord with millions and she became a sensation online. Since then, she has sung many songs on students, migrants, women and marginalised sections.

Her nearly two-year-old YouTube channel now has 2.86 lakh subscribers. On Facebook, she has 3.67 lakh followers. Her songs are often a take on social evils such as dowry and alcoholism.

Belonging to Bihar’s Kaimur district, Rathore is a BSc graduate. Her Facebook bio reads: “Fighting to restore the honour of Bhojpuri that has been ripped off by the sleazy movie songs”.

This isn’t the first time that Rathore has sung an election song. A few months ago, her songs “Uttar Pradesh mein chunaab aaile paas” and “Jumlebaaz rajau” had also drawn attention.
