Sweet potato or shakarkandi, as it is known in Hindi, is a master root vegetable when it comes to the fasting/vrat season in India. Organically, vegan and gluten free, it results in lovely dishes that are filling as well as gives the right energy required during all those times when you are keeping fast.

One such yum dish is this simple Sweet Potato Chaat. Just 5 ingredients and you’re ready with an easy, fuss-free Shakarkandi Chaat. Perfect food for your Navratri or any other religious fasts.

Although I have made shakarkandi ki chaat for Navratri fasting. But it tastes so good that you can have this chaat any time. The sweetness of the shakarkandi pairs very well with the slight pungency of the black pepper powder and the tang coming from the dry mango powder and lemon juice.

While living in Gurugram (Gurgaon), on occasions we used to have shakarkandi chaat during the winters from the street side thela (food cart).

I still remember the smoky flavor in the chaat coming from roasted sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes would be roasted on coal and this would give them a lovely smoky flavor, that you will not get if you roast the sweet potatoes in an oven or steam them in a pressure cooker or pan. But nevertheless this recipe of sweet potato chaat still tastes good.

I have used here spice powders which are consumed during Navratri fasting. But if not fasting, then you can always add your choice of spice powders.

Sweet potato is a superfood. This makes it obviously a better and more nutrient dense choice, when compared to the regular potatoes. Since shakarkandi is also naturally sweet and starchy, it qualifies as a great veggie to make amazingly delicious sweet dishes as well, in addition to the savory ones like this Sweet Potato Chaat.

This Shakarkandi Chaat also packs many essential nutrients in it and is an excellent health dish. Because these tubers are rich sources of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, this chaat automatically becomes a wholesome and hearty meal in itself.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Firstly rinse 260 to 270 sweet potatoes very well in water. Then steam them in a pressure cooker or a pan.

If cooking in a pressure cooker, then pressure cook for about 3 to 4 whistles with water just about covering the sweet potatoes.

I steamed sweet potatoes in a rice cooker. In the picture you see four sweet potatoes, but I only used two of them for the chaat. You can even peel sweet potatoes first and then steam them.
