About the National Conference

Being majorly an agrarian economy, 54.6 % of India’s population is engaged in agriculture and allied activities (Census 2011), accounting for 18.8 % of India’s Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2021-22. There has been significant growth in agriculture-allied sectors including animal husbandry, fishery, poultry, and agri-business. Being a sector that acts as a source of food supply, supports the livelihood of many, contributes to the national income, supports industrial development, and facilitates commercialization, it requires effective management through legal and regulatory mechanisms.

Academic attempts for the development of legal knowledge in this sector have been complex since it requires an understanding of the interrelation of relevant concepts and theories in the fields of agriculture, sociology, politics, economics, geography, science, technology, and law amongst others.

The complexity is further exacerbated since the discipline demands understanding the requirements of innumerable stakeholders including farmers, technocrats, agricultural labourers, insurance companies, banks, agricultural and allied industries, consumers of agricultural produce, agricultural research institutions, animals including cattle, the state, environment, and the population of the nation and the world at large.

Further, agriculture exists in a space that interconnects several related areas of law like constitutional law, administrative law, international law, human rights law, labour law, the law of contracts, commercial law, land law, intellectual property and technology law, and environmental law.

Therefore, the national conference aims to provide a platform for deliberation on various standpoints of researchers from diverse fields of knowledge to facilitate a deeper understanding of the role of law and policy in addressing the current and future challenges that the agricultural and allied sectors face and may face in the foreseeable future in India and the world.
