CfP: One Day National Conference On Legal History Of South India by TNNLU, Tiruchirappalli [June 10]: Submit by April 9

The Tamil Nadu National Law University is organizing a one day national conference on Legal History of South India to be held on June 10, 2023 and is inviting submission through call for papers.

About TNNLU

The Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU),  Tiruchirappalli located in Srirangam Taluk of the Tiruchirappalli  District, was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by the Tamil  Nadu Act No.9 of 2012 to provide quality legal education.

About the Conference

The discipline of History as we know it emerged in British India with James Mills History of British India. And from then for a long time, history meant only political and administrative history.

This represented the actions of only a small section of human society. Mid twentieth century witnessed a paradigm shift from this approach through the writings of D.D. Kosambi,A.L. Basham etc. The scope of history was widened by including social, cultural and economic aspects of society.

Legal history, on the other hand, is still an emerging discipline in India unlike in other parts of the world, like Britain, Germany, the USA etc. Unlike the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, today we have a variety of sources to study the development of legal ideas and institutions along with the other aspects of society in the South Asia region.

Among others, inscriptions of ancient and medieval south India, literature both sacred and secular, the colonial documents especially the court records and monuments such as court buildings are very crucial to construct the legal history of South India.

It is in this background that the faculty teaching history at the Tamil Nadu National Law University and conducting Legal History through the Legal Centre for History of South India has planned this one day National Conference.,

The conference has been planned with the aim to provide an opportunity to initiate a preliminary discussion and debate among historians and legal scholars who are interested in the field of legal history of South India.
