Constitution will cease to exist if country’s original demographic profile altered: Madras High Court judge Justice GR Swaminathan

Speaking at a private book launch event on April 2, Justice Swaminathan further said that the demographic profile that existed at the time of its (the Constitution’s) drafting must remain unaltered.

“Constitution is the ultimate for everyone. If the Constitution has to remain the same, the demographic profile that existed at the time of its (the Constitution’s) formation must remain unaltered. Only if the demographic profile remains the same, will the Constitution remain the same. If the demographic profile changes, the Constitution will perish,” Justice Swaminathan said.

He also said the Constitution will continue to exist as long as the people who follow Indian tradition and dharma continue to do so.

“The Constitution will continue to exist as long as the people who are under the Indian tradition and dharma remain so,” he stated.

He added that as a judge, he could not speak more on the issue.

“Being a judge, I don’t want to say anything more. Hope you understand,” he said.

In his speech delivered in Tamil, the judge also spoke the citizen’s duty to be mindful of the dangers the society was facing.

He quoted Tamil saint Andal to reiterate that citizen’s must wake up and see the dangers their society was facing.

Justice Swaminathan went on to say that many individuals who speak or boast about their love for Tamil “often possess limited knowledge of the language.”

He narrated an incident where a man had come to visit him, spoke much about how he loved the Tamil language and culture. However, when he asked the visitor to recite just two stanzas of a classic Tamil text, the man was unable to do so.
