Russia’s war on Ukraine latest: Russia steps up strikes on key Ukrainian cities

LONDON (Reuters) – Russia’s forces kept up a barrage of attacks along the front concentrated in two Ukrainian cities in the eastern region of Donetsk, Ukraine’s military reported, as Kyiv said it repelled more than 40 enemy strikes over the past 24 hours.

FIGHTING

* Ukraine’s military reported continued Russian strikes, with the heaviest fighting still focused on two cities in eastern Donetsk region – Bakhmut and Avdiivka.

* Russia has destroyed a depot containing 70,000 tonnes of fuel near the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, the Russian defence ministry said on Sunday.

* President Volodymyr Zelenskiy denounced Russian air strikes coinciding with the observance of Orthodox Palm Sunday, including an attack that killed a father and daughter at home in the city of Zaporizhzhia.

* Reuters could not verify the battlefield reports.

LEAKED DOCUMENTS

* Some Western security experts and U.S. officials suspect that highly classified military and intelligence documents that appeared online, with details ranging from Ukraine’s air defences to Israel’s Mossad spy agency, may have been leaked by someone from the United States.

POPE’S EASTER MESSAGE

* Pope Francis appeared to ask Russians to seek the truth about their country’s invasion of Ukraine in his Easter message to the world on Sunday and appealed for dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians following recent violence.

CHILDREN

* More than 30 children were reunited with their families in Ukraine this weekend after a long operation to bring them back home from Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea, where they had been taken from areas occupied by Russian forces during the war.

Kyiv estimates nearly 19,500 children have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea since Moscow invaded, in what it condemns as illegal deportations. Moscow says they have been taken away for their own safety.

DIPLOMACY, TRADE

* Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova is set to visit India on Monday and will seek humanitarian aid and equipment to repair energy infrastructure damaged during Russia’s invasion, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

* Russia threatened to bypass a U.N.-brokered grain deal unless obstacles to its farm exports were removed, while talks in Turkey agreed that removal of barriers was needed to extend the agreement beyond next month.
