Punjab and Haryana High Court stays Haryana government ban on meat, meat products near Mata Mansa Devi temple

The Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Haryana, Urban Local Bodies Department had via order dated December 20, 2022 declared the demarcated area near Mata Mansa Devi temple as “HOLY AREA” and thereby prohibited the slaughtering, sale and purchase of meat and meat products.

The petitioners moved the Court contending that no public intimation was given to them and that the order did not refer to any statutory provision under which such a declaration was issued.

In the absence of invocation of any such substantive power, enforcement of restraint against the petitioners from carrying on their business/occupation, is violative of the rights granted to them, it was argued.

It was further contended that the petitioners were duly issued their licences by the competent authority to deal in the sale and purchase of meat and meat products in the said area and that they undertake to carry out business as per law.
