Calcutta High Court refuses urgent hearing of PIL related to Independence Day violence in Hooghly

The matter was mentioned today before a division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya by an advocate.

“Milords, we need an urgent hearing of this PIL, which is related to communal violence in Hooghly over hoisting the flag in a school. It is a very serious issue,” the lawyer told the Court.

The Chief Justice, who was sitting virtually, given his ill health, refused the request for an urgent hearing.

“Please come and mention on Monday. Not today, please,” Chief Justice Sivagnanam told the advocate.

In turn, the advocate insisted that his matter be listed for hearing on Monday, when the bench usually hears PILs.

To this, Chief Justice Sivagnanam responded,

“No, you come and mention on Monday, we will see it then.”
