About SLS

One of the oldest law schools in India, the School of Legal Studies (SLS) was established in 1962 as a part of Kerala University, offering postgraduate courses and research in law under the leadership and guidance of the late Prof. (Dr.) A T Markose, an internationally acclaimed jurist and academician. The Law School joined the folds of the University of Cochin in 1971, which was later reorganized and renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1986 for the promotion of graduate, and post-graduate studies and advanced research in various fields.

About ICAR-CIFT

The ICAR – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), set up in 1957, is the only national centre in the country where research in all disciplines relating to fishing and fish processing is undertaken. The institute started functioning at Cochin in 1957. Research centers function at Veraval (Gujarat), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Mumbai (Maharashtra).

About SOFTI

The Society of Fisheries Technologies (India) (SOFTI) was established in 1962 as an independent non-profit-making body registered under The Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act XII of 1955 at Ernakulum. The Society has members engaged in research, development, education, and policy-making related to fisheries.

About CUMC

The Cochin University Maritime Club (CUMC) at the School of Legal Studies works for the conscious and continuous development of knowledge related to the maritime field. It offers a platform where students sharing similar interests can come together under one roof to exchange knowledge and ideas on topics such as maritime trade, the Law of the Seas and regulatory trends.

About the Conference

In the wake of the International Maritime Organization’s commitment and long history of protecting the marine environment from the impact of shipping, the theme for World Maritime Day 2023 has been selected as ‘MARPOL at 50-Our Commitment Goes On’. In harmony with these initiatives, the School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and the Cochin University Maritime Club, in collaboration with ICAR – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi and Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)[SOFTI], Kochi is organising a two-day International Maritime Conference – “International Maritime Conference on Marine Conservation & Sustainability: Celebrating 50 Years of MARPOL,” on 19 and 20 October 2023 in Hybrid mode.

The conference aims to bring together scholars, researchers, academicians, policymakers, industry professionals, and students from a diverse range of disciplines to deliberate on pressing issues related to marine conservation and sustainability in the context of MARPOL’s 50th anniversary.

Theme

The conference is an attempt to explore the environmental, socio-economic, legal and trade concerns in the light of various disciplines overlapping with the central theme of the conference under discussion and would inter alia explore topics identified as themes below:

  • Law of the Seas and Evolving Jurisprudence
  • Legal and Regulatory Framework for Marine Conservation
  • Ocean Governance and International Cooperation

  • Marine Fisheries
  • Sustainable Innovations in Marine Fishery Technology
  • Environmental Conservation, Ecosystem Preservation and Biodiversity Protection
  • Marine Pollution and Waste Management
  • Blue Economy and Sustainable Development
  • Maritime Trade and Sustainability
  • Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Marine Conservation
  • Greenwashing in Maritime Trade
  • Sustainable/ Energy Sources and Marine Conservation

Eligibility Criteria

This conference is open to all students, researchers and academicians from the disciplines of law, marine sciences, fisheries and any discipline related to the theme of the conference.

Submission Guidelines

  • There shall be a maximum of only two Authors for each paper, and all participants are permitted to enjoin as co-authors to a maximum of one paper only.
  • Plagiarised works will not be encouraged or accepted. We expect all submissions to be original and properly cited.
  • Authors may be expected to revise their abstracts and full paper submissions based on reviews and comments received from the organising team.

Formatting Guidelines

  • Participants can register for the conference for Paper Presentation. Submission is accepted for Papers (3000 – 6000 words, exclusive of footnotes).
  • Abstracts not more than 400 words (excluding keywords) on the above-mentioned themes are invited to be submitted as Word (.doc/.docx) documents containing the name, Email address, contact information and designation of the author(s).
  • Potential contributors are required to adhere to a uniform mode of citation (Bluebook 21st Edition).
