He was speaking at the valedictory function of the All India District Legal Services Authorities Meet organised in New Delhi.
The event, the first of its kind, saw the participation of all District and Session Judges, from across the country, in charge of legal services.
Justice Chandrachud began his speech by stating that he was invited since he is a “self-confessed geek of technology”.
In his speech, the judge highlighted the role of technology in legal aid.
“Most of the beneficiaries are illiterates. So two end of spectrum is might of the state and the beneficiaries. Technology enables us to do something which wings of State do not have us do – that is talk to each other,” he said.
With regard the specifics of technology currently employed by the judiciary, he said,
“Core of technology in Indian judicial system is case information system. Core is the CIS platform. We are also in the process of alert mechanism for judges to make them aware of the prison term being suffered by undertrials.”
