PWD to build foot over bridge to ease pedestrian movement between Anand Vihar and Kaushambi

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) With an aim to improve movement of pedestrians between Anand Vihar in east Delhi and Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh, the Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to construct a foot over bridge (FOB) near the ISBT connecting these two areas, officials said on Wednesday.

They said the department has also floated tender for the award of the work last week.

According to PWD officials, the length of the FOB will be around 60 metres while it will be nearly four metres wide. The FOB will be a disabled-friendly facility and equipped with elevators and staircase on both sides.

“The aim is to ease pedestrian movement in the region as at present there is only one FOB on the main road to connect Anand Vihar with the transport facilities at the other side of the road. This FOB is unable to tackle the crowd during rush hours. So a new FOB has been planned,” a PWD official said.

According to Delhi government officials, the footfall at this FOB is between 1,000 and 1,500 people per 15 minutes. The existing FOB is already in bad shape with one of the two escalators mostly remaining dysfunctional.

Anand Vihar is a multi-modal transport hub in east Delhi as it houses a city bus station, a metro station, a railway station and an Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT). A station of Delhi-Meerut RRTS rapid rail is also being planned at Anand Vihar which will further increase the pedestrian influx in the area.

“Keeping the existing as well as future demand in mind, we have decided to construct an FOB here. Tenders have been floated and construction work is expected to start soon. It will be a disabled-friendly facility which will ease pedestrian movement on both sides of the road,” another official said.

Earlier last month, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot had conducted a surprise inspection of Anand Vihar ISBT and directed officials to improve passenger facilities and ease pedestrian movement in the region. PTI AKM AKM CK CK
