What happened in 5 important cases heard by Supreme Court on CJI NV Ramana’s penultimate working day

Cause title: Manohar Lal Sharma v. Union of India

Petitioners: Advocate ML Sharma, Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, Director of Hindu Group of publications N Ram, founder of Asianet Sashi Kumar, Editors Guild of India, journalists Rupesh Kumar Singh, Ipsa Shatakshi, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, SNM Abidi and Prem Shankar Jha.

Bench: CJI NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli

About the case: A slew of petitions seeking a probe into allegations that the Pegasus spyware created by an Israel company was used by the Government of India to snoop on several persons including Indian journalists, activists, lawyers, officials, a former Supreme Court judge and others by infecting their electronic devices.

The Supreme Court had constituted a three-member expert committee to probe the scandal.

What happened today: The committee reported that the Pegasus spyware was not found in the 29 mobile phones examined by it.

After examining the report, the Court noted that while some malware was found in 5 out of the 29 devices, it was not Pegasus. The Bench also noted that Government of India did not assist the committee and hinted at the possibility of uploading the report on the Court website.
