Goan Fish Curry Recipe

Goan Fish Curry Recipe with step by step pictures. Delicious creamy goan fish curry which has fresh spices and fish cooked in coconut milk.

I love Anjum Anand recipes, they are so delicious and quick to make. She explains all her recipes in a vey passionate way. I have pretty much all her cookbooks in my shelf. This recipe is from her cookbook Anjum’s  New Indian Cookbook. As soon as I came across this one, I know that this is going to be the one which I am going to try out very soon and last week I did it..The result is a creamy coconut milk and spices flavoured fish curry, pour it over some rice and you will melt down in each spoonful of bite. It was that good.

About Goan Fish Curry Recipe

The Goan Fish Curry is the dish that Goa is best known for. It is a coconut-based dish that is typically served with fluffy rice and red chillies, fresh fish, or prawns. Goan cuisine is made up of local dishes that are popular in Goa, an Indian state on the Arabian Seas western coast.

Goa’s cuisine has Konkani roots and was influenced by both the Sultanate rule that came before the Portuguese and the 451 years of Portuguese rule. Many Catholic dishes have names or ingredient combinations that are either similar to or different from their Portuguese counterparts.

Ingredients for Goan Fish Curry Recipe

Fish Steaks :

A fish steak is a cut of fish that has the bones and is cut perpendicular to the spine. Larger fish, including tuna, swordfish, salmon, cod, and mahi-mahi, are frequently cut into steaks because fish larger than 10 pounds are typically used to make fish steaks. Fish steaks can be baked, broiled, pan-fried, or grilled.

Coconut Milk :

Coconut milk is extremely versatile, and it can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. Chongchitnant explains that in largely dairy-free Thai cuisine, its used to add creaminess and fat to a wide range of dishes, from sauces and dressings to curries and stews to puddings and dessert soups.

Turmeric powder / Manjal podi :

The turmeric root is quite bitter, but has an almost citrusy taste, compared to the powder. Turmeric also has something of a sweet taste, and it is quite earthy. When you use the powder, you’re unlikely to notice the texture unless you use a substantial amount, but it is somewhat gritty.

Chicken, potatoes, onions, coconuts, chillies, and other spices are the main ingredients in Goan curry. Kashmiri chillies are specifically used because they give the food an intensely hot flavour and add colour.

What is traditional Goan food?

The staple diet of most Goans is rice and fish curry, which is thought to be an essential component of Goan cuisine. Once you try it, you’ll understand why. The most popular dish is kingfish (also known as vison or visvan). Pomfret, shark, tuna, and mackerel are a few more.
