BCCI case: Supreme Court appoints Senior Counsel Maninder Singh as Amicus Curiae

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana noted that the earlier Amicus Curiae PS Narasimha is not available any more since he has been elevated to the bench as Supreme Court judge.

“We have to hear the amicus also, now he is not available any more. I will appoint new one. Senior Advocate Maninder Singh is new Amicus Curiae,” the Court said.

The matter was then listed for hearing next on July 28.

The BCCI has moved a plea before the top court to amend its Constitution. The proposed amendments seeks to do away with the mandatory cooling-off period between tenures of office bearers across State cricket associations and the BCCI.

The Constitution drawn up based on the Justice RM Lodha Committee recommendations, mandates a three-year cooling-off after six years for the position for an office-bearer of cricket bodies at the state level and for the BCCI.

The amendments sought by the BCCI include the abolition of the cooling-off period for office-bearers like the president and secretary. This would enable the current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah to continue in office.
