About ‘Map-A-Forum’
Map-a-Forum is an initiative by Kalindi Kokal (IIT Bombay) and Siddharth deSouza (Tilburg University, The Netherlands; Founder, Justice Adda) – to organize information about the various types of non-state forums for conflict resolution that exist in India.
Envisioned as an encyclopedia of non-state forums, the project has been imagined as a map of India (and eventually South Asia) in which the forums will be dotting the canvas. The map will be interactive, which means that clicking on a region or a forum would open up the written contribution about that forum. This map will be hosted on the website of Justice Adda.
The Map a-Forum project takes off from a virtual conference titled Plural Ideas of Justice Stories, Narratives and Experiences from India that Justice Adda in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung organised in April 2021 bringing together case studies, field notes and theoretical analysis about what we understand about justice through the different methods of conflict resolution that people adopt in conjunction with or independent of the state.
As part of this project, there was an effort to build a database of such non-state forums that scholars have written about or may have come across during their fieldwork. Such a database will not only help scholars access information about the different types of forums more easily, but also provide scholars working on similar subjects/ in similar areas to connect for further knowledge building.
Given that at present such data, although rich in content, remains scattered; we hope that such a platform will become a productive site of engagement.
Submission Details & Procedure
- Abstract of not less than 100 words are invited containing the author’s name, the non-state forum identified, its location and brief description of the forums’s main functions.
- Once accepted, the final contribution ought to be of 500- 1000 words. There is no fixed style of writing, however, we would request that contributions ensure that the following questions are answered:
- Name and exact location of forum, including village/taluka. The more detailed, the better the map!
- Usual composition of the forum: number, gender, caste/religion specificities.
- Methods of dispute processing that are usually adopted. This can be explained with empirical examples too.
- Types of cases that usually come to such a forum.
- Objectives of the forum.
- It is understandable that non-state forums are often fluid in composition and form and therefore there may be a chance that there are no exact answers to these questions. In this case, provide as much information as you can about such a forum as is necessary for a prima-facie understanding of it.
- Font, Style: Times New Roman,12pt, 1.5 space.
- Submissions are welcome from students, researchers and academicians.
