CfP: International Conference on Environmental Justice 2023 by Jindal Global Law School [Online; Aug 25 & Sep 1]: Submit Abstract by July 15

Jindal Global Law School in association with other institutions is inviting submissions for its International Conference on Environmental Justice.

About the Organisers

  • Centre for Environmental Law and Policy, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka- University of Colombo has always set a remarkable example in approaching and theorizing new concepts, principles, and trends within the education system in Sri Lanka.
  • The Jindal Global Law School is committed to providing global legal education to its students. To fulfill this objective, the curriculum and pedagogy are designed to give extensive exposure to students to domestic, international, and comparative law courses. JGLS has also entered into collaborations, exchange programs, research partnerships, and other forms of engagement and interaction with top universities and institutions across the globe. 
  • The Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) was formed in December 1971 as a Commonwealth-wide body with an aim to foster and promote high standards of legal education in the Commonwealth.
  • Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Catania, Italy- Founded in 1434, the University of Catania is the oldest university in Sicily. With an average enrolment of 40.000 students in 17 departments, it is one of the largest Italian universities with a strong international orientation.
  • CAPAZ German-Colombian Peace Institute & Chair for Peace Studies, Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany- Founded in 1607, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is a long-established research university that attracts around 28,000 students.
  • The City University of New York is the nation’s leading urban public university. It begins in 1847 with the birth of the Free Academy, where “the children of the rich and the poor take their seats together,” in the words of Townsend Harris, CUNY’s visionary founding father.

About the Conference

Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, Jindal Global Law School, OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat, India, Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA), Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Catania, Italy, CAPAZ German- Colombian Peace Institute & Chair for Peace Studies, Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany and the City University of New York, United States are pleased to announce the first International Conference on Environmental Justice 2023 (ICEJ’23), which is to be held virtually on 25th of August and 01st of September 2023.

The ICEJ’23 aims to bring together research scholars working in the area of environmental justice. The purpose of the conference is to encourage young research scholars to present their research before a panel of academic experts and to receive valuable feedback for further research.

Furthermore, this conference seeks to build fruitful research collaborations among institutions across the world. UNDP’s flagship Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE), jointly implemented with the Ministry of Justice and UNICEF Sri Lanka, funded by the European Union, facilitates the International Conference on Environmental Justice 2023 (ICEJ ’23).

About the Call for Papers

  • The Conference welcomes submissions by postgraduate students and early career researchers from any disciplinary field across the world. In the case of co-authors, at least one of the authors must be a current postgraduate student or an early-stage career academic.
  • The thematic areas of the Conference will be centred around issues of Environmental Justice. The acceptance of abstracts will depend on the relevance of the issues raised by the conference panels and the originality of the research after being screened by a panel of reviewers. 
  • The abstracts selected by the reviewers will be invited for a full paper presentation at the Conference. The selected authors at the Conference will be offered the possibility to publish their paper in a special journal publication, subject to a careful selection following editorial and peer reviews.

  • Environmental Justice: Asian Dimensions and Legal Responses.
  • Beyond Environmental Justice: Climate Justice, Energy Justice, and the Just Transition.
  • Environmental issues in the United States of America with an interdisciplinary approach and a perspective on Environmental Justice.

Thematic Areas for Submissions

  • Environmental Justice: Innovation, Technology, and AI; Will the law complicate or Complement?
  • Cooperative Federalism and public policy; instrumentalities for achieving ecological parallel (preservation, conservation, and protection of biodiversity).
  • Energy security, carbon neutrality, groundwater-the right to a clean and healthy environment.
  • Waste an opportunity for transformation with a strong business case.
  • Gender, Elderly, Children, and Refugees: Transforming the Right to Dignity – Transforming right to ensuring dignity in a satisfactory environment.
  • “Just Transition”: What is just and for whom?
  • Global Interconnections and climate justice in the Pathways Towards Low-carbon Futures.
  • Entanglements of biopower and energy power: The role of energy as a socio-political force.
  • Transitioning in times of conflict: what we can learn from local case studies.
  • The Role of intersocietal inequalities and Intersectionality in justice issues
  • Approach to Climate Change through Research, Pedagogy, and curriculum setting and the establishment of a Climate Change Consortium on Governor’s Island in New York City.
  • Non-conventional Source of Energy Generation and job creation in big cities Climate Change and Resilience in coastal cities in the USA.
  • Green House Gas Monitoring and Climate Adaptation Environmental Justice, Policies, and Solutions in New York City.
  • Solid Waste /wastewater and its mobility.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of topics. You are welcome to submit abstracts on any topic of your interest as long as it falls within an area of concern on Environmental Justice.

Guidelines for Abstract Submission

  • Please note that the number of selected abstracts for presentation in the final Conference is strictly limited to 60 abstracts.
  • Authors should write an abstract between 250 to 300 words relating to the themes of the Conference.
  • The abstract should include a suitable title for the paper, three to five keywords, the name of the author(s), and their affiliation.
  • The abstract should be coherent and free of grammatical errors.
  • Selected abstracts are published for the conference proceedings.

Guidelines for Full Paper Submission

  • The main text of the full paper should be written in Times New Roman font size 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and footnotes in Times New Roman font size 10, with a line spacing of 1.0.
  • All the headings should be numbered and written in 12 points. Each main heading (first level) should be capitalized, bold, and centre-aligned. The second-level heading should be in title case, bold, and left-aligned. The third level heading should be in title case and left-aligned.
  • Authors should follow the APA Style mode of citation throughout the paper.
  • The word limit for the full papers should remain between 5000-8000 words, including footnotes (excluding abstract and bibliography).
  • All the authors shall give an undertaking that the plagiarism of the paper is below the permissible limit of 15%. Research should be an original work of the author and must not have been submitted or accepted for publication.
  • Authors should strictly adhere to the following formatting guidelines:
    • Do not use abbreviations without prior explaining the terms.
    • Do not use bold and/or underlining to highlight the text.
    • Use single quotes to emphasize a word or phrase.
    • Tables and charts should be centre-aligned if used.

Certification

  • E-certificates will be provided to all the author(s) who present their papers at the Conference.
  • Best paper presentations will be awarded in all the themes at the Conference.

How to Register?

  • Authors shall register and submit their abstracts and CV at the link given at the end of this post.
  • In the case of more than one author, only the corresponding author must initiate the registration process.
  • Co-authorship is allowed up to a maximum of two authors for one paper.
  • Authors shall fill in all their particulars and upload their abstracts on the given link to complete the registration and submission.
  • Authors shall make all the submissions only in .doc format.
  • On the successful registration and submission of the abstract, authors will receive a confirmation email. In case you encounter any issues during the entire process, kindly contact the organising team at celp@law.cmb.ac.lk.
  • Participation in the Conference is free of cost.

Important Dates

  • Last date for the submission of the abstract: July 15, 2023.
  • Announcement of accepted abstracts: July 31, 2023.
  • Final Conference dates: August 25 and September 1, 2023.
  • Submission of Full Paper: October 31, 2023.
