Delhi High Court takes suo motu cognizance of manual scavenging deaths in capital

According to the TOI report , a 32-year-old sweeper was killed after falling unconscious while clearing a blocked sewer in a residential society in outer Delhi’s Mundka on Friday, September 9. Following this, a security guard who entered the sewer to save the sweeper also fell unconscious and died there.

“Police identified the sweeper as Rohit Chandiliya, 32, a resident of JJ Colony in Bakkarwala and the security guard as Ashok, 30, of Jhajjar, Haryana. The Mundka police station received a call around 4pm on Friday of about two people succumbing to sewer gases,” the news report stated.
