The Court was hearing a writ petition by one Trupti Mayee Patra seeking a direction to the Registrar (Examination) of Orissa High Court to include her name in the list of eligible candidates for the 2023 recruitment examination to the post in the cadre of District Judge from the bar by issuing a fresh list.
The petitioner practiced as a lawyer between the years 2004 and 2014. She surrendered her license in 2016 after being selected as a Junior Clerk in the office of the District and Sessions Judge in Malkangiri. Thereafter, in 2018, she was appointed as an Assistant Public Prosecutor.
She appeared for the District Judge recruitment exam unsuccessfully in 2020, 2021 and 2022. However, in 2023 she was found ineligible to appear. Aggrieved, she moved the High Court.
