Girl students rowing across dam to reach school prompts Bombay High Court to take suo-motu cognizance

The case was registered by the Court after it came across a news item on a web portal, MumbaiTak, narrating the ordeal which the children, particularly girls of Khirvandi village in Satara district have to go through everyday to reach school.

As per the article, girl children were plying a boat by themselves from one end of the Koyna dam to another to reach their school.

The entire journey, to the school and back, was of 4 kilometres and it passed through dense forest containing wild animals like bears and tigers, etc.

The news item further stated that though schools in Maharashtra were closed due to pandemic situation, the students of Khirvandi village continued to attend school following their daily routine.
