West Bengal Panchayat polls: Supreme Court refuses to halt deployment of central forces; says elections not license for violence

Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora, appearing for the State Election Commission (SEC), added that the election commission has been working on identifying sensitive poll booths and the observations that SEC was not doing anything, were incorrect.

189 poll booths have been recognised as sensitive… I am aggrieved by 2 directions of the High Court … it says Election Commission should decide on requisition of forces and deployment has to be in sync with sensitive and non sensitive ones.”

She also stated that the High Court had directed the SEC to requisition central forces from the State government. However, this could not be done since it is the task of the State and not the SEC.

We can only ask for the force and from where they get it is not something we look at,” the Senior Counsel explained.
