It is about time we discuss some southern states and see the eligibility, language requirements, and syllabus of the judicial exams. 

Mind you, the pattern of the examination for all judicial states remains the same. That is Prelims followed by Mains and Interview. 

About the Karnataka Judicial Services Examination

Karnataka Judicial Services Examination is conducted annually for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) in accordance with Karnataka Judicial Service (Recruitment) Rules, 2004 and Amendment Rules, 2011, 2015, and 2016.

Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can apply for the exam. 

In Karnataka Judicial Services Examination, candidates go on probation for two years. During probation, candidates undergo one-year training and must pass the Kannada language examination, if not passed previously. 

Karnataka Judicial Service Examination Eligibility

• Must have obtained a law degree from a recognized University established by law in India and must have been enrolled as an Advocate.
• Candidates belonging to the General category must not have completed 35 years.
• In the case of SC/ST, the prescribed age is 38.

Application Process

The application process is online. Candidates can fill out the form whenever the notification gets published. Fill the form with the correct information about reservation, education, etc.

• General category: Rs. 500
• Reserved Categories: Rs. 250

Karnataka Judicial Services Examination Syllabus

The Preliminary examination is an objective type of paper divided into three parts carrying 100 marks. 

Part A

• Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
• Negotiable Instrument Act, 1981
• Transfer of Property Act, 1882
• Indian Contract Act, 1872
• Specific Relief Act, 1963
• Indian Constitution 
• Karnataka Rent Act, 1999

Part B

• Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
• Indian Penal Code, 1860
• Indian Evidence Act, 1872

Part C

General Knowledge, test of reasoning, and mental ability.

Mains Written Examination

There are a total of four papers carrying 100 marks each. These are:

Paper I- Translation Paper (100 Marks)

In Karnataka Judicial Services Examination one translation from English to Kannada and Kannada to English each are asked. The passages include:

3. Documents

 Law Paper-I (100 Marks)

1. Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
2. Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
3. Indian Penal Code, 1860
4. Indian Evidence Act, 1872
5. Principles of Pleading and the Constitution of India

Law Paper-II (100 Marks)

Framing of Issues and Writing of Judgment in Civil Cases

Law Paper-III (100 Marks)

Framing of Charges and writing of Judgements in Criminal cases

Note: The minimum passing mark for General category for each paper in the written examination is 50. Candidates other than the General category need to secure 40 marks.

Viva-Voce (100 Marks)

The interview round is a test of general knowledge, grasp of principles of law, and suitability for appointment as a Civil Judge.

The candidate needs to secure a minimum of 50 marks. For categories other than general, the minimum marks are 40.

Computer Test (25 Marks)

This paper carries 25 marks only, and marks obtained in the computer test are not a part of the final merit list.
