Can Thumbs up emoji on WhatsApp land you in trouble? Madras High Court answers

The RPF Constable Narendra Chauhan had been removed from service for misconduct for using thumbs up emoji to react to the message about an Assistant Commandant’s murder by a Constable in 2018.

The message had been posted in an official WhatsApp group.

The sharing of the emoji was seen as a “moral support to the murder” and after enquiry, Chauhan was removed from service.

In 2021, Chauhan moved the High Court against his dismissal. A single-judge last year opined that Chauhan had mistakenly used the emoji and directed the authorities to reinstate him without back wages.
