Project Arivu- For Awareness About Nyaaya Mitras by OutLawed India [March 18-28]: Register Now!

OutLawed India is organising Project Arivu- For Awareness About Nyaaya Mitras on 18-28 March 2024.

About OutLawed India

OutLawed India is a not-for-profit company founded and run by NLSIU alums that aims to equip communities with the knowledge and skills required to access law and justice independently. OutLawed India has worked with 700+ law students to enable legal awareness and skill-building for 5000+ people.

About Nyaaya Mitra Programme

Reading the law without formal legal education can often feel like being stranded on a deserted island. OutLawed India has been actively addressing this problem through its various programs. One such program is their Nyaaya Mitra Programme wherein they are building a community of paralegals in the legal field equivalent to that of ASHA workers in the medical field.

Nyaaya Mitras are paralegals who are trained in everyday legal issues and work tirelessly to bridge the gap in the legal field by being first-point-of-contact legal aid. They hand-hold the individual in crisis by describing various legal options available to them, to registering an FIR, to following up on the status of a case. They take up proactive projects like helping communities file for various welfare schemes and identity cards.

The best part about the Nyaaya Mitra Programme is that it creates an employment opportunity in the legal field for individuals even without having a formal legal education!

About Project Arivu

“Arivu” in Kannada means “Knowledge/Awareness”. Project Arivu ismeantto introduce and spread knowledge about paralegals and their work to various sections of society. Through this program, law students are required to do one or more of the following:

  • Visit any community of your choice that has at least 20 individuals. Understand the legal issues they face, introduce who a paralegal is and what their role is, how they can help.
  • Be a Nyaaya Mitra/Paralegal yourself for the duration of the project! You can do one or more of the following:
    • Visit a community of your choice that has at least 20 individuals, understand the legal issues they face, and provide them with options under the law
    • Help 10 individuals in your community access justice better either by helping them lodge an FIR, checking the status of the case, or informing the individual about further steps.
    • Help at least 20 individuals apply for various welfare schemes/identity cards
  • Call at least 30 paralegals enlisted on your respective DLSA website and ask them what kind of training they have received.

During the project, the students will receive:

  • Resources that will help them conduct these tasks
  • Mentorship from OutLawed India to guide and support during the initiative
  • Opportunity to collaborate with law students across institutions

Through this Project, the students will have an opportunity to virtually meet with some of OutLawed India’s paralegals and know the work they have been doing first-hand! The students will also receive certificates for taking part in this project.

Project Duration

The project runs from March 18th to March 28th!
