Calcutta High Court refuses to entertain VHP plea for action against CM Mamata Banerjee

Senior Advocate Kishore Datta, who also is Advocate General (AG) for West Bengal, told the Bench that he is not appearing as AG, but is representing a private respondent to the PIL. After hearing Datta, Chief Justice Sivagnanam said there is no point in entertaining such a PIL.

“This PIL petition seeks issuance of a direction to ensure sanctity of the society at large and the people are maintained and no particular community is made an object of humiliation because of their affiliation to certain religious institutions,” the Bench recorded in its order.

The Bench further added,

“We are of the view that such matters cannot be dealt with in a PIL jurisdiction. Petitioner can voice their grievance appropriately.”
