From Aspiration to Achievement: My Journey at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram

This Law School Experience has been shared by Thanush S, Campus Leader at Lawctopus.

My name is Thanush S., and I am a first-year BA LLB student at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Established in 1875, Government Law College, Trivandrum, is one of the oldest and most prestigious law schools in India.

It has a rich legacy of producing distinguished legal professionals and offers a robust curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience. My journey in law school has been enriching and transformative, providing me with numerous opportunities to grow academically, professionally, and personally.

Academic Achievements

In my academic journey, I have consistently aimed for excellence. I ranked in the top 1.5% of the KVS SSE 2023 and was the SSCE Topper for Class XII in the Humanities Stream, both accolades issued by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in May 2023.

Additionally, securing the 190th rank in the KLEE entrance exam was a significant milestone that led to my admission to Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. These achievements laid a strong foundation for my legal studies.

Extracurricular Activities

My involvement in extracurricular activities has been diverse and impactful. To gain practical legal experience, I’ve begun freelancing and tackled tasks like judgment briefing, which involves summarizing court rulings. My research interests lie in the IPR Laws.

I presented a paper titled “From Theatre to OTT: IPR Challenges in the Film Industry,” delving into the intellectual property issues arising with the rise of online streaming platforms.

Committed to continuous learning, I’m currently pursuing a diploma in contract drafting from Law Sikho. This program is further equipping me with the skills to excel in the legal field. Additionally, I am an active member of the Naval Wing NCC, which has instilled in me valuable leadership qualities and discipline.

While law is my passion, I also enjoy expressing myself musically. As a guitarist, I recently placed third at the prestigious Kerala University Kalolsavam 2024, showcasing my dedication and perseverance.

Personal Growth

Volunteering as part of the Judges Committee for the 18th All India Moot Court Competition was a profound learning experience. Interacting with esteemed judges like Hon’ble Justice K P Balachandran (Retd.) and coordinating with various committees provided invaluable insights into moot court competitions.

Furthermore, I have volunteered on the organizing committee for the National Seminar on “Empowering Girls for Leadership: Rise and Lead,” co-hosted by the National Commission for Women and Government Law College.

This event aimed to inspire young women to pursue leadership roles, and meeting Shri. A. Ashoki Chalai, Joint Secretary at the National Commission for Women and Child Development, was particularly inspiring.

Attending the Human Rights Day celebration at Ayyankaali Hall on December 10th, 2023, was another significant event. The celebration marked the diamond jubilee of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and featured insightful addresses by Justice Ashish Jitendra Desai, Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, and other distinguished speakers.

This event deepened my understanding of human rights issues and the role of local governments in protecting them.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a Kerala State Protection of Child Rights Commission sitting after completing my internship there. This experience gave me practical knowledge about child rights and fostered a deep sense of compassion for the issues faced by children.

During my internship, I explored the online system used for filing complaints with the commission and learned about legal concepts relevant to children’s rights, such as judicial authority and burden of proof. This practical exposure to the workings of the commission has significantly broadened my understanding of child rights issues and the legal mechanisms in place to protect them.

Conclusion

My experiences at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, have been instrumental in shaping my academic and personal development. They have reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in law and public service.

I am eager to continue this journey, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in the legal field and beyond.

The combination of academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and personal growth experiences has prepared me to face future challenges and contribute positively to society.
