INTERVIEW: The Importance of Extra-Curricular at Law School

This interview has been conducted by Mohd. Abuzar, a Campus Leader at Lawctopus.

Could you please introduce yourself and share a brief background about your journey so far?

Good morning, Mohd Abuzar. Thank you for having me. My name is Salman, and I am from Roorkee, Uttrakhand. I completed my 12th standard from CBSE board at Roorkee and then pursued my graduation in law from Aligarh Muslim University.

After completing my law degree, I started practicing as an advocate at the Delhi High Court in 2019. I am humbled to share that I’ve been actively involved in various extracurricular activities during my graduation, such as moot court, debate, and essay writing competitions etc, which have greatly contributed to my growth as a legal professional.

That is impressive, sir. Your involvement in extracurricular activities during graduation is truly inspiring. How do you think these activities helped you in your professional journey so far?

Thank you, Mohd Abuzar. Those activities were instrumental in shaping my skills and personality. Moot court, for instance, helped me develop my argumentation and research skills, which are essential for a lawyer.

Debating and essay writing competitions honed my critical thinking, writing, and communication skills. These skills have been invaluable in my practice as an advocate, enabling me to draft better petitions, argue more effectively, and communicate complex legal ideas to clients and colleagues.

That is great to hear. As an advocate at the Delhi High Court, can you walk us through a typical day in your life? How do you manage your workload and prioritize tasks?

A typical day for me begins early, around 7:00 am. I start by responding to urgent emails and messages, followed by a thorough review of my schedule for the day. I prioritize tasks based on court hearings, deadlines for filings, and client meetings.

I ensure I allocate sufficient time for case preparation, research, and drafting petitions and responses. Time management is crucial in this profession, and I strive to stay organized and focused to deliver quality work to my clients.

That is very organized, sir. What are some of the most significant challenges you face in your work, and how do you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges is staying updated with changing laws and judgments. I overcome this by regularly reading legal publications, attending seminars and webinars, and engaging with fellow lawyers to share knowledge and best practices.

Another challenge is managing client expectations and communicating complex legal issues in a clear, understandable manner. I address this by being transparent, empathetic, and proactive in my communication with clients.

Your dedication to your craft is admirable, sir. What advice would you give to young law students or aspiring advocates who look up to you as a role model?

I would advise them to be passionate, persistent, and always keep learning. Develop strong research and communication skills, and never be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance. Stay true to your values and principles, and always keep the client’s interest’s paramount.

Believe in yourself and your abilities, and never give up your goals.

Thank you, Mr. Salman, for sharing your valuable insights and experiences with us today. Your journey is truly inspiring, and I’m sure it will motivate many young legal professionals.
